DR. BECK WEATHERS INSPIRES AJCONGRESS ANNUAL MEETING
On
Sunday morning, January 22 over 100 people gathered for brunch at
the American Jewish Congress Annual Meeting at
Congregation Tiferet
Israel. During a preliminary business meeting event chair and
regional vice president Marcy Helfand installed new Board members
and thanked the outgoing ones. A video about the current worldwide
operations of AJCongress was shown, followed by a briefing on local
activities by regional president Dr. Howard Baum.
But by all
accounts, the undisputed high point of the event was hearing Dr.
Beck Weathers tell his riveting story of survival during a blizzard
while climbing Mt Everest. His account of disaster, fear, freezing
conditions and being left to die on the mountainside mesmerized all
who attended. Dr. Weathers’ tale of loss of friends, and personal
survival through a sheer determination to return to his family was
an inspiration to all who were at the brunch. Everyone agreed that
this was a powerful kickoff to what will be a dynamic year of
AJCongress activism and community programming.
The new board
members installed are Garry K. Kahalnik, Marla Greenberg Lewins,
Barbara E. Rosenberg, Pat Silverman Rosson, and Dan Weiser. New
Honorary Board members are Walter Levy and Rose Marie Stromberg.
The American
Jewish Congress is a membership association of Jewish Americans,
organized to defend Jewish interests at home and abroad, through
public policy advocacy, in the courts, Congress, the executive
branch and state and local governments. It also works overseas with
others who are similarly engaged.
